History
Kriya Shakthi Vodavaru Swamy founded a town in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh and named it Dharmavaram after his mother’s name Dharmamba. The town is blessed with numerous mulberry trees which makes it a favorable place for sericulture. So naturally, this town becomes a hotspot for silk weaving and there are your Dharmavaram Silk sarees. These pure silk Dharmavaram sarees got national recognition by the 19th century because of their extraordinary weaving styles and designs.
In the beginning, these sarees were woven just for wedding purposes in the shades of red and yellow but with the evolving time, the weavers have introduced the saree in almost all the possible colors and with evolving designs, motifs, and embellishments to meet the market demand.
There is a huge demand for Dharmavaram sarees today in the global market, so the process of weaving them is partially mechanized to help the craftsmen meet the required demand. Today these sarees have secured their position as a “must-have” in people’s wardrobe with such a vast demand that it has become hard to believe that Dharamavaram got its national recognition just a century ago.
Today there are around 15 hundred Dharmavaram silk manufacturing openings with over 1 lakh handlooms.
Description
These sarees are known for their gold-plated borders and imprinted artwork. The saree stands out because of its religious depiction of the culture through its designs like peacocks, elephants, or aesthetic temple designs.
With the expanded creativity and innovation in today’s era, Dharmavaram sarees are ornamented with sequence, decorative stones, chumkis, and kundans.
This saree is highly favored by South Indian brides as its heavy designs and rich appearance becomes one of the best choices for a wedding.
Thanks to globalization, Dharmavaram has demand even in the foreign soils of France and Germany. And because of that, its elegance and royalty are being highly appreciated by many other countries as well.
Dharmavaram sarees are extremely silky and heavy-weighted, it is recommended to dry clean them with gentle ironing to maintain their grace.
