History
According to the mythological tales, Markanda used to weave clothes for the lords and all the Kanjeevaram weavers are his descendants.
Kanjeevaram or Kanchipuram originated in the temple city of Tamil Nadu named Kanchipuram and inhabited its name from there. The history of this saree can be traced back to 400 years. It is believed that Devangas and Saligars, two major weaving communities from Andhra Pradesh came all the way to Kanchipuram and settled there. They began to weave Kanjeevaram silk with designs inspired by the sculptures and figures they saw on the temples around the village.
Once this saree hit the popularity bell, it earned its position as a “must-have” for all saree lovers and enthusiasts.
Description
The most interesting fact about Kanjeevaram weaving is that its pallu and borders are weaved separately and later joined while finishing its production. The parts are joined in a particular zigzag pattern, called pitni. The uniqueness of its appearance is that the pallu of the saree has mostly nothing to do with the body. It is different in color as well as in design. The silk threads used while weaving this saree are twisted with silver wire, making the fabric more strong and durable.
From the time of its origin, the designs were inspired by temples, and even today Kanjeevaram sarees narrates the tales of mythology through its temple figured designs. Even the borders of this saree are dominated by temples and general painting designs.
Generally, a Kanjeevaram saree can weigh up to 2 kgs.
