History
Khun weaving was started during the rule of the Chalukya Dynasty in Karnataka in the 8th century as per some beliefs but there is no historical evidence of its emergence. Guledgudda is the home of Khun fabrication. It is a small village in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka which was once the developing hub of handloom weaving.
The belief states that a piece of Khun fabric was folded in a triangular shape and placed on a saree as an offering to the then Goddess during the religious festivities. It is said that the fabric got its name “Khana” or “Khun” from its folding patterns (small squares).
The fabric reached its saturation point when the power loom industries started to rule the Textile world. But somehow its richness was rediscovered by the textile industry a few years back.
Description
The fabrication of Khun was done by passionate weavers because it is a challenging task to weave this fabric. It takes 15 days to weave just 20 meters of Khun.
Initially, this fabric was used to make blouses to pair with the Ilkal Saree but now the evolved weavers have made the fabric suitable for saree as well as for other women’s wear.
Khun fabric is known for its lightweight texture and various combinations of designs, patterns, and motifs. It is a mixed fabric of pure cotton and silk. It is majorly worn by the Women of Maharashtra and north Karnataka.
