History

Narayan Peth is a locality situated in the Pune city of Maharashtra. The name of the Narayan Peth Saree is based on a locality called Narayan Peth situated in Pune city of Maharashtra.

As per the historic tales of 1630 AD, Chatrapati Shivaji, the Maratha King was traveling and camped at Narayan Peth to rest for a while. When he continued his journey, some of his accompanied weavers stayed back there. The production of silk sarees with a distinctive border and palla was a beautiful contribution to the textile industry from these weavers.  Some textile experts think that this is the reason behind the shared similarity of Maratha influence on Narayan Peth sarees of Telangana and Ilkal sarees of North Karnataka

Today these sarees are very popular in and around the Solapur district situated in Maharashtra.
