Karnataka

Karnataka, the Garment Capital of India, is known for its silk and traditional weaving technique. The state produces 65% of the total Mulberry Silk production of the country and is the largest producer of the same.  Karnataka contributes abundantly to cotton production as well. It produces 20 lakh cotton bales annually. Apart from silk and cotton, the state is also responsible for 11% of total wool production nationally.

The weaving tradition of Karnataka can be traced back to the 8th century. Ilkal sarees are the living evidence of that weaving. Over the centuries, the fabric has not lost its charm but managed to glorify its existence in the market.

According to the Geographical Indication,  a huge variety of sarees have been obtained from the three clusters of the state, like the Mysore Silk sarees, Ilkal sarees, Karnataka Kasuti sarees, and Udupi Cotton sarees.

Currently, the state possesses 120 thousand power looms and 40 thousand handloom weavers. Karnataka is also the one state that took the initiative to step into Modern Textiles. World’s biggest spinning unit, M/S Himatsingka Seide that has 2.11 lakh spindles resides under the roof of this state. To cater better to the Textile industry,  the state has 144 skill development centers and 168 private training centers. The state has 7 textile parks for the development of its textile industry.
