Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is a vivid and ancient land known for its timeless treasures of arts and crafts. It is a vast state with an abundance of diversities in its art, people, culture, and region. The state is blessed with loads of tourist attractions beginning with one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal. Two of the holy rivers, Ganga and Yamuna flow through this state. The state has always remained historically and culturally important.
There was a rapid growth of industrialization in this state after the economic liberalization in 1991. One of the other industries which flourished in this state was the textile industry. Uttar Pradesh has the third-largest cotton textile industry in India with a total of 73 cotton mills in it and is responsible for 13.24% of the total cotton production of the country. The state has also secured the fifth rank on the leaderboard of the country’s silk production.
Some of the important textile products of this state are:
- Chikankari: It is a form of embroidery with very delicate and intricate work. Lucknow city is famous for its Chikankari work.
- Banarasi Brocade: It is one of the finest fabrics that our country offers. This fabric is the specialty of Varanasi and is still considered to be one of the luxurious fabrics.
- Zardosi: This was once considered a reserved fabric for the royalties and elites. It is a skill where silver and gold threads are used to fabricate elaborately embroidered garments.
The state is home to 4.21 lakh power loom weavers and 2.58 lakh handloom weavers. Uttar Pradesh constitutes about 6.71% of total handlooms in the country which is the 5th highest number of handlooms in India. 90% of carpets produced in India are from UP. The state has a consumer base of more than two hundred million people and so becomes the biggest market of Textiles & Handlooms.
