West Bengal
Home to Tagore, West Bengal is a treasure box of cultural dances, remarkable poetry, and melody. Apart from these, the land is also famed for its textiles which have varied designs and different manufacturing techniques.
The state flourishes for its cotton and silk textiles. Some of the textile productions of West Bengal include:
- Jamdani: It is one of the most time-consuming and laborious forms of handloom weaving. This fabric is made with a cotton base. It is also considered one of the finest variants of Muslin.
- Nilambari: This cotton handloom saree is an indigo-dyed fabric.
- Shantipuri: This fabric is a production of Shantipur. These sarees can be easily distinguished from their extra wrap designs.
- Dhaniakhali: The name was derived from a district of Hooghly and is known for making fabrics in pastel shades.
- Baluchari: It is a popular woven brocade from the Murshidabad District and it stands out because of its unique and artistic designs.
- Cowdial: Another fine silk fabric from Murshidabad known for its maroon or deep red borders ornamented with gold zari.
- Vishnupuri: These traditional silk sarees are a specialization of Vishnupur.
Even Jute and Leather production are well appreciated in this state.
